Obesity is a worldwide epidemic and continues to grow in the United States at an increasing rate. As bariatric surgery becomes more popular, patients can lose the weight, but still suffer from the after effects of massive weight loss. The patient after bariatric surgery typically losses significant weight, but is left with hanging skin. The skin, once stretched out, typically does not retract and patients are left with excessive skin. The excessive skin can occur on the arms, abdomen, thighs and breasts. The excess skin can lead to problems with infection, embarrassment, as well as hinder the patient from exercise of carrying out their activities of daily living. Plastic surgery can offer procedures to significantly reduce the skin and help patients complete their goal to healthy living after weight loss. I particularly enjoy helping the bariatric patient. I feel that once a patient is committed to weight loss, they should not feel trapped in their skin.
Tummy Tuck procedures are a great solution for anyone who has loose skin and muscle. Floyd Herman, MD specializes in tummy tuck procedures in patients who suffer from the above due to weight loss, pregnancy or even abdominal surgery. The tummy tuck procedure consists of modifying this loose muscle and skin. Depending on the intensity of the problem, Floyd Herman, MD puts forward several options for the patient to consider before making the final decision.
In most cases, the ideal candidate for a traditional tummy tuck is one whose entire abdomen is loose with excess muscle and skin. Floyd Herman, MD performs the surgery using an incision which extends from one hip to another. Once the muscle is tightened, all the excess skin is removed. To provide top-class aesthetic results, Floyd Herman, MD also reshapes the belly button as part of the tummy tuck procedure.
Patients who have this looseness below the belly button can talk to Floyd Herman, MD about having a mini-tummy tuck. This is a combination of muscle tightening along with liposuction and removal of a very small amount of skin. Floyd Herman, MD’s experience makes it possible for him to do all this leaving behind a scar which is much smaller than the one seen in a traditional full tummy tuck. Floyd Herman, MD’s patients have been able to recover very quickly as well.
Liposuction is a safe procedure that can benefit any adult who wishes to eliminate unwanted, excess fat. As technology has advanced, plastic surgeons have been able to make improvements to an already safe and effective procedure. Men and women alike can benefit greatly from liposuction with a skilled plastic surgeon. Dr. Floyd Herman prides himself in being able to take on this procedure on any part of the body, even the face.
Some of the common areas in which liposuction can be done include:
- Love handles
Making tiny incisions in the skin, your surgeon uses specialized tools to gently loosen the fat beneath the skin before the actual liposuction procedure. The loosened fat can then be suctioned out through a cannula, which is a small hollow tube like a straw. Many surgeons and patients alike view liposuction as more of a sculpting procedure. This is because the reduction of fat in specified areas typically leads to better overall proportions and better contours.
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that may be performed on its own, or in combination with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck. Where liposuction reduces the fat that lies under the skin, the tummy tuck procedure will remove excess skin that may not tighten back to its normal state on its own. During your consultation with Floyd Herman, MD, an assessment of the skin will help in making the determination if liposuction alone will produce the desired effect. Being a Board Certified plastic surgeon, Floyd Herman, MD is armed with both the academic and technical expertise and experience to help patients accomplish their desired outcome from liposuction surgery.
Floyd Herman, MD understands that everyone wants to look their best. When patients are dealing with a tired, aging appearance, they may benefit from plastic and reconstructive surgery at his practice. Fat injections are requested by many patients who want to reduce bags under their eyes.
Fat injections use fat cells harvested from other areas of the body. Floyd Herman, MD refines the fat before injecting it into specific areas of the face. It can be used in areas such as the eyes, temples, cheeks, and nasolabial folds to add much-needed volume for a more youthful appearance. It can be done in conjunction with other surgical treatments including facelifts and neck lifts.
Most fat is removed from areas of the body such as the abdomen, hip or thigh where patients may have excess fat cells and may have considered liposuction. The fat is removed with a syringe and then redistributed to areas of the face or other parts of the body.
Fat injections are an excellent alternative to dermal fillers and provide more long-term results. The best candidates for fat injections (also known as fat grafting) are those who are experiencing areas of lost volume in the face. These patients may have undergone dermal fillers or collagen stimulators and been unhappy with the short-term results they provide. Patients who want a more permanent treatment may be deemed an appropriate candidate for treatments such as this.

The most common form of cancer affecting patients continues to be skin cancer. There are many types of skin cancer. The most common forms include basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma. Typically, patients receive a diagnosis of skin cancer after biopsy by a dermatologist. Once diagnosed with skin cancer one can be overwhelmed with the multitude of treatments. However, surgical excision of the cancer still is the standard of treatment for most forms of skin cancer. The surgical excision will typically allow confirmation of diagnosis as well as ensuring that the margins of the resection are negative. Thus, giving patients the best chance of preventing recurrence or spread of the cancer.
I have a strong interest in skin cancer surgery. Most skin cancers, if small, can be efficiently removed in the office. Typical procedures last approximately 30 minutes. Plastic surgery is considered much more efficient and time saving than other procedures such as the Mohs procedure. Plastic surgical excision usually takes less normal skin out during the resection and wounds are closed before leaving the office. Plastic surgery also allows for techniques that can reduce deformity and optimize scar formation. Finally, if the skin cancer is large or near vital anatomic structures formal surgery may be needed and a board certified plastic surgeon is your best option for treatment.
With that said, if given a diagnosis of skin cancer, I would be more than happy to provide consultation. I firmly believe that if anyone is planning on using a scalpel on you for excision of skin cancer, that person should be a board certified plastic surgeon. I literally have treated thousands of patients with skin cancer with an excellent success rate. If you have skin cancer, I look forward to treating you.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common syndromes of the hand. The basic cause of the syndrome is compression of the median nerve typically at the level of the wrist or hand. This compression over the long-term can lead to numbness of the hands with inability of the hands to grasp. Patients may also complain of severe pain that can even wake them at night. Those affected by carpal tunnel syndrome can have significant morbidity since we use our hands for most everything.
I treat patients that may be affected with carpal tunnel syndrome. The initial consultation typically includes a physical examination of the hands. Most patients are then ordered for nerve conduction studies, x-rays of the hands and certain blood tests to determine if the patients have medical conditions that can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. If the results of those tests indicate that carpal tunnel syndrome is the cause of the symptoms, I am proud to offer endoscopic carpal tunnel release.
I am one of the few surgeons in the area to offer endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery. The benefits of endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery are many. The incision is much smaller and placed on the wrist, so that recovery is significantly quicker with less pain. Patients will also find it much easier to drive or use a cane or walker after surgery. Results of carpal tunnel surgery differ between patients, but most patients begin to have significant reduction in their symptoms within three months. It is also important to note that most patients will have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands, but surgery is usually done on one hand at a time.
